Exploring with our friends
Here at BestStart Mosgiel, ‘children experience manaakitanga (respect)’ as they explore their environment with their peers. This supports them to understand how social experiences can enhance their sense of belonging and their ‘mana’ is supported to allow them to grow. Through these friendships, children learn how to work with / alongside others and their negotiation / problem-solving skills are repeatedly rehearsed.
As children’s social and emotional understandings develop, they deepen their friendships and are encouraged to move these friendships through to other aspects of their lives. As our children explore both indoor and outdoor environments, they are able to share some quiet times together reading a book as well as supporting each other to create magnificent structures with our many building resources.
Teachers encourage children in their learning by observing these relationships and are able to provide additional support should it be required. Relationships are an essential tool and our children learn this life-long skill in a supportive environment.
