Expressive Arts and Creative Play
At BestStart Marshland Road, our Prep-room is excited about the current classroom focus, which is "Expressive Arts and Creative Play". We love to provide different experiences for children to encourage them to express themselves. The arts offer children to channel their imagination, other ways of being, the exploration of possibilities, and the satisfaction of agency within a safe space.
Recently we had set a “Design Your Own Food Character Art Activity” with a focus on our classroom theme. Teacher Chelsea provided the children with different vegetable pictures to create faces, such as potato, capsaicin, and cucumber. She also included different fruits to use to decorate their faces, like strawberry, blueberry, raspberry, etc. As children were choosing their pictures, we talked about food color, where they grew and if they had eaten them before.
Children talked to their peers when creating their characters and discussed why they chose the features for their characters. Our children showed their fantastic imagination and creativity through interacting with design ideas and expressing personal and emotional choices. I was so impressed with the children’s display of creativity through their innovative designs, as well as building connections with others while they create. Mīharo! Awesome, everyone!
