At BestStart Parkside we're continuously thinking of creative and fun ideas to extend children's early numeracy and early literacy skills through play. Carrot hunting for Easter has become a yearly activity for us. Children participated by wrapping the carrots in foil. They practice their counting skills, as they count the carrots to be hidden. The fun part is hunting for the carrots and then using these carrots for baking a carrot cake. Every second Thursday we do curriculum baking with the children. Children learn many life skills through cooking and baking. Children who have developed great fine motor skills are able to apply their skills in other areas of play, which is extending their creative and cognitive thinking.
