Currently in the Kea room, Babies, Dolls and Family role play are a combined interest with a large group of our tamariki. The Kea room Kaiako noticed this interest when a group of children were washing some of the preschool dolls in the water play trough and using tissues to dry them.

The next day, our Kaiako set up a “baby washing station” outside in the water trough for the children to wash their dolls and dry them with a towel. This activity proved very popular and the next day, our tamariki asked if the dolls could have their own baths. Which led to Kaiako setting up little baths for each doll. This activity was extremely popular and Kaiako enjoyed watching and listening to the interactions happening between the children.

We heard things like…. “My baby is squeaky clean” “My baby is enjoying her bath” “My baby is sitting on the sponge” “You’re getting cleaner baba” “My baby you love bubbles aye” “Aye stop that I need to wash you” “I’m washing my babies dirty face”. We continued supporting this interest many different ways and used our resources in new ways to set up a “Baby care station” with a changing area, feeding area and a dressing area.

This set up was very successful and the tamariki asked for it throughout the rest of the week. Kaiako will continue to set up new and exciting activities for our tamariki to show manaakitanga towards their dolls for however long this current interest is happening in our room.
