Over the last couple of weeks at BestStart Tory Street we've been focussing on developing our fine motor skills.

It was a great opportunity for us to use this time of the year to develop our fine motor skills. We did a lot of craft activities and artwork using different mediums to create cards and Christmas decorations.

Our tamariki were showing a great interest in doing puzzles and in construction. Therefore we have provided them with many construction activities such as marble runners, building blocks and lego.

Some tamariki were practicing writing their names and other letters that they wanted to learn to write. Some wanted to make patterns with the magnetic boards where they needed to hold a pen to create patterns. Playdough is always a favourite for everyone.

We also provide natural resources for children to do sorting and to use their imaginations to create anything they like.

Developing fine motor skills in children is incredibly important. Everyone understands the impact this will have on early writing, but this is only a tiny portion of the full picture.

Fine motor skills are a central part of our lives. By developing their fine motor control, children can access so many more things and become confident and able people.

As children improve their fine motor skills, they develop their independence in doing a range of tasks such as eating, writing, speaking, creating, and dressing themselves. They are able to access a wider source of learning activities, and social experiences. And this is what we love to do at BestStart Tory Street!
