At BestStart Tory Street, we were talking about fire safety and the children were all interested in learning more about fire. To extend their learning, we arranged for our local fire station's firefighters to come and visit us.

The firefighters came into our centre and showed us all the gear that they have to wear when they have to fight fires.

First, they explained to us about the dangers of the fire. They also said how the smoke is very dangerous and we need to stay down and go out. To practice this in real life, two fire fighters held a big black cloth on top of us and we had to pretend it was black smoke and we had to get down and move out quickly without running. This was really awesome and all the tamariki loved it.

Then an awesome fire fighter showed us how they wear their uniform and the special helmet and face mask. Children had the chance to experience what they really looked like, because he looked very different wearing the special face mask.

Our curriculum Te Whariki explains how children become increasingly capable of making connections between people, places and things in their world.

Then we went out and had a good look at the fire truck and went inside the truck too.

It was so much fun going inside the truck and walking around the truck to see all the equipment.

After the truck was gone, teachers extended this experience into more learning activities. We did a sorting activity such as looking for cold/hot things, cutting and pasting the pictures on paper. We wrote letters and read the book which has all the fire safety information. We spent a lot of time reading this book and looking at the pictures.
