Fostering leadership in our four year olds

In the Kauri room our last planning cycle learning focus was around Kaitiakitanga - our tamariki demonstrating leadership and ownership over their learning, and becoming a kaitiaki/guardian of their environment. Fostering Leadership Our tamariki begin to explore leadership through various activities that nurture their natural inclinations. 

Through engaging in writing exercises, participating in group activities, and learning to understand others’ perspectives, children develop essential skills that align with Te Whāriki and New Zealand School Curriculum competencies. Te Whāriki Learning 

Outcomes: 

  • Well-being (Mana Atua): By taking on leadership roles in group activities, tamariki develop a sense of confidence and well-being, contributing to their holistic development. 
  • Belonging (Mana Whenua): Through collaborative writing and group tasks, tamariki learn to work together, fostering a sense of belonging and understanding within their peer group. 

New Zealand School Curriculum Competencies: 

  • Thinking: Engaging in writing tasks encourages tamariki to think critically and express their ideas creatively. 
  • Relating to Others: Leadership activities involve considering others’ viewpoints and understanding the dynamics of teamwork, enhancing their ability to relate positively to peers. 

Through these activities, our tamariki not only cultivate foundational literacy and social skills but also begin to grasp the importance of empathy and effective communication, laying a strong foundation for future learning and leadership.
