At BestStart Pharazyn St Kindy, we have a 4 year old focus time every day. This is the time the older tamariki come and sit at the table and do some focused activities facilitated by the teachers. These learning experiences prepare them to be familiar with the primary school classroom situations. They learn to recognise their names and write their names. They learn how to hold a pencil properly to write and draw.  Tamariki do this a lot as this provide them with opportunities to be creative and also to communicate to others their ideas and thinking and imagination, they also learn to respond to the works of others.

We do science experiments where tamariki explore how the natural and physical worlds work. We do baking which involves lots of mathematics (measuring and counting) and thinking. We read stories and tamariki retelling the stories, creating pictures related to the story. We play board games which promote their thinking and memory and help them become familiar with numbers and naming objects.

Every day when Kaiako calls for "Four Year Old Group Time", tamariki run towards the Kaiako and say, “I am four, I am four”. They all want to join in the group time and really enjoy it.
