Lately at BestStart Waikite Valley Kindy we have had a focus on learning about the human body, namely the digestive system. This started during our Healthy Heart day with conversations about "what foods are good for our body" and following on to "what happens to food when we eat it?" So we decided this was a great point to start exploring this topic further.

Together with the children we made a child sized cardboard cut which we called “Frank”. We chose to use collage to decorate "Frank" as a way to get all of the tamariki involved in this project. We also made organs so that he would be more interactive; eyes, mouth, esophagus, heart, stomach and intestines. This was an excellent way for the tamariki to be able to be further engaged and learn about where these organs are positioned in their bodies.

We have been using "Frank" alongside a book called "Food & Me" at mat times to continue to develop the children's understanding what is happening inside their bodies when they eat food, what food our bodies need and why it is important to be mindful of what and how we are eating. It has been tremendous to see how quickly they are retaining this new information and also sharing it at home.
