We took four of our keen gardeners to tidy up our garden plot in South Alive Community Gardens. Tamariki took this ongoing learning experience to connect with the local community and their peers through their shared interest in nature and gardening. We harvested some potatoes and tamariki learned how to work in a group to wash and then pack them for our community pantry, so that we could give what we can to our wider community.

As Matariki is approaching, kaiako and tamariki shared their strengths and learned new skills in harakeke weaving. Tamariki experienced an environment where they discover different ways to be creative and expressive, over time and with guidance and encouragement, children become increasingly capable of expressing their feelings and ideas using a wide range of materials and modes which aligns with Te Whāriki.

Through these small group times, tamariki can initiate, maintain and enjoy relationships with others. Kaiako use teaching strategies such as acknowledging their contribution and help. Tamariki feel confident and know their strengths to support kaiako and friends. Kaiako use one hand approach to enrich children's verbal communication skills as this approach allows children to hear familiar and new vocabulary using visual pictures to support their understanding.
