The team at Great North Road have had their awesome thinking caps on during this Level 4 lockdown in Auckland. The team have gotten together within their rooms and come up with fun, exciting learning experiences for our tamariki and whannau.

We have seen many science experiments, art and craft ideas, story times, waiata and weekly zoom mat time sessions. Mat time has been a hit as it has been a great way for all to keep connected, see familiar faces and share with each other what we have been doing to keep ourselves occupied throughout lockdown.

Father’s day! We celebrated Father’s day and our lovely kaiako Kanchan provided us with a card tutorial using natural material from her garden and common art material. It was great to see the engagement from our whaanau as they had shared their cards they had made at home.

Laura did a science experiment: Make your own Lava Lamp. What we found out?

  • Water and oil do not mix! Because water is denser than oil, it will always sit on the bottom of the container.
  • The oil doesn’t change colour because the food colouring is water-soluble.
  • Vinegar and baking soda make a chemical reaction, creating bubbles of carbon dioxide.
  • The bubbles attach themselves to the coloured water and bring them to the top of the container.
  • When the bubbles pop, the coloured water falls back to the bottom of the container.

Science helps children learn to observe things closely, explain their thinking and communicate their ideas. They learn to classify, measure and predict. They can create theories and try them out. See what happens if… and explain their findings in their own way. All this enriches their understanding of the physical world around them.
