Fun with Friends!

The Makomako room has recently been extending the children's senses through a range of activities that stimulate and challenge their current knowledge and abilities. This morning, we explored the coloured rice in the water trough, with three friends climbing in to investigate. They sat in the trough and smiled at each other, before exploring with their senses to experience the new textures and colours.

They used their fine motor skills to pick up handfuls of rice and then giggled as it slipped through their fingers. The chatter and giggles as they explored and investigated could be heard around the room, and they continued exploring for most of the morning. Climbing out of the trough, the children discovered that the rice was stuck to their feet and that it made clicking sounds as they walked across the floor. Then they went back in to further investigate and explore.

This was a great opportunity for them to share their ideas (through early language and facial expressions) and experiment with new textures and experiences. We have continued to offer new ways to extend their sensory development through scents, textures, and images. We can't wait to see where their curiosity and quest for knowledge will lead them next.
