At BestStart Kawaha Point, this month has been action-packed. As Autumn approached and then arrived in a hurry, so did all the leaves off the neighbouring trees. Lots of activities were planned and undertaken using the leaves around us, such as certain types of trees losing their leaves at a certain time of the year. What is Autumn and what does it look like? The tamariki learnt that Tāwhirimātea (wind god) was who had blown the leaves off the trees and into our playground.

Leaves were raked and swept up daily by the Kaiako and then the tamariki asked if they could help. The different tamariki chose to come and help beautify our outdoor environment by raking, sweeping, and piling up the leaves, on many occasions. This brought about conversations about leaves, gardening, and the different seasons. Tamariki talked about their homes; gardening, mowing lawns, raking leaves etc and how they helped or watching family members look after and clean up their whare.

Through our homely centre we like to have a home away from home for our tamariki to come and be a part of. During our time beautifying our environment, children were able to link centre life with home life.
