As part of our journey toward the healthy heart award we have been thinking up new ways to introduce vegetables into the children's diet. The children enjoy carrot and celery sticks with hummus and cheese, and carrot wraps and vegetable soup. This time we decided that we would try a fruit and vegetable smoothie. We got the spinach, banana, yoghurt and milk ready and the children helped us to put all the ingredients into the cup. Once we had the ingredients in we put it on the magic bullet and they watched as it turned into a green drink. At first they were a little unsure of the drink but we encouraged them to have a small sip. Most of the children loved it and ask most days if we are going to be having smoothies for morning or afternoon kai. We have been experimenting with a few different fruits and vegetables each time. We have put in celery, broccoli, spinach, banana and blueberries and they have enjoyed all of them. They will also ask for seconds and sometimes thirds of the smoothie. This is a great way of including fresh fruit and vegetables into children diets. Through this experience the children are learning about preparing food that will give their body all the nutrients it needs to grow and learn.
