Every school holiday, we have a very special holiday programme running at BestStart Huntington, filled with a range of exciting learning experiences for our tamariki ma to engage in.

One day was create and decorate your own cupcakes.

The first part of this was to bake these delicious cupcakes that we would soon be decorating. Together we searched for a recipe online, chocolate chip turned out to be the favourite choice. After washing our hands, we began measuring a range of ingredients that we would need. Along the way, we tested out the chocolate chips, to ensure that they were tasty enough for our cupcakes. We have an amazing cook called Natalie, who took on the responsibility of ensure that they were cooked to perfection, in time for them to cool down to decorate that afternoon.

Natalie created a tray of assortments for us to use as we explored our creative side, choosing ingredients that appealed most to us and some of us creating an array of mixed ingredients on our cupcakes.

We first had to place the coloured icing on to ensure that the sprinkles stuck to the muffin. We focus each week on a colour, letter and number in our toddler learning environment, so as we iced our muffins and talked about our colours, it was clear that we have really developed our knowledge in this area, being able to name each colour.

It is important for us at BestStart Huntington that we provide our children with opportunities to be creative and independence, our holiday programme is intentionally planned to ensure that these skill sets are being supported and extended.
We had some amazing looking cupcakes at the end, which we thoroughly enjoyed eating with afternoon tea.
