Beststart Te Aroha have been creating great relationships with our local school Te Aroha Primary.

Every week we take a hikoi to Te Aroha Primary and take part in a PMP class. This is called a Perceptual Movement Programme, which focusses on developing the tamariki's gross and fine motor skills.

This programme focusses around our foundational skills that are essential for children’s development before they begin to read, write and learn mathematics. Foundation skills cover fine and gross motor skills, speaking, seeing, and hearing skills and competencies like giving things a go and being curious. These skills begin to develop at birth and continue to develop as children reach school age. This programme is offered to our 4 year olds, who are preparing their learning for their transition to school. Each week we try to take the same tamariki so that they get continuity, and each week we can see them developing their skills.

The tamariki really enjoy getting out of the centre on hikoi's, and here at Beststart's Te Aroha this is one of our centre priorities to make connections with the community, especially our local kura's. Its also a great opportunity for them to visually experience school life and what it looks like.
