Getting ready for our axolotl
Here in the Pūrerehua room this month we have been getting ready and prepared to receive our pet. The kaiako (teachers) here in the room thought it would be a good idea to create a project around pets. We decided this would be a great thing to do so we can find out what we all know and what we can all learn.
We have discussed what pets we can or do have at home, what they eat, where they live and how we can keep them safe so far, lots of great mahi from our tamariki (children).
The tamariki have embraced the learning and are excited to be getting a pet here in our room. We have decided we will get an axolotl.
We have a special pet wall where we can display our pets from home, this leads to learning about how we take care of them and what the needs of a pet are.
As well as our pet project we are also looking at our gardens. The Pūrerehua kaiako and tamariki are working with our cook to plant and grow our own kai. This is an important part of our culture and centre philosophy around sustainable practice and healthy eating. We also have such a huge interest in bugs within the room that it is also a great opportunity to discuss what bugs or insects we can find in our gardens and how they help our plants grow, like worms or how they eat our plants, like white butterflies.
We are excited to harvest our gardens when the time is right and share with each other, whānau and community.
