Getting to know the Atua
Following our amazing WAM show the children have been even more interested in the Atua so we have been finding out more about them and including this learning in all areas of the curriculum. Maddie and Tatiyana have been talking about Tane Mahuta and his children on our weekly bush walks and exploring the myths and legends through the creative arts.
The children often surprise us with their knowledge and questions and sometimes in the funniest places. Here are some examples of how they are making sense of the Atua by making connections to their world around them.
Grace was going to be on holiday for a couple of weeks and this was the conversation she had with Maddie while on a bush walk:
Grace- How do we talk to Tane Mahuta? (God of the forest)
Maddie- We might not be able to see him but he is all around us. You can talk to him now and he will listen.
Grace- I really need to call him and tell him I will be away for 2 weeks at Popchop's house.
Jax was in the playground when it stated to rain. This video captures his thinking:
Tamihana loves Tane Mahuta and points his children out wherever we go. Here he is talking to Maddie about the Tui in our playground.
Ada has been drawing her own representations of the Atua. Here is what she knows about Tāwhirimātea:
