Once a week our eldest children go on an excursion to the Otatara Scenic reserve, a patch of native bush just out of Invercargill. We often get asked if we are going to the bush when it is a wet, rainy and cold day. We believe that there is no bad weather, only inappropriate clothing. Because of this we have our own wet weather gear, spare boots and spare thermals for all the children. This way every one can come, and enjoy the elements! Every week is a little bit different, the weather changes, the seasons change and there is always something new to explore.

Over the last few weeks at the bush the teachers have been impressed by how independently the children are playing at the moment. They are all content to make up their own games and challenge themselves without coming to the teachers to be entertained. These independent play skills are so important for our children to learn at the bush, the children can set their own fun and explore where they want to. The teachers come along to support and engage where they can, but we love watching the children make their own fun. The children have fun on the swing, the rope bridge and particularly climbing trees. We have been picking blackberries over the last two months and this week we might have eaten the last of them before Autumn sets in.

Sometimes our parents come to the bush with us, and they usually have just as much fun as the children.
