Granny McFlitter the knitter
Everyone knows I'm an avid knitter at Beststart Greenmeadows including the tamariki. I purchased two books from our local Wool Shop called Granny McFlitter A Country Yarn and Granny McFlitter The Champion Knitter. Reading these books opened the tamariki's thoughts on knitting to a whole new world of what wool can be used for. My knitting they thought could be a fishing net or a scarf. Our first book was about how Granny saved the Country Fair with her wool by catching the Bull with a wool lasso. She also knitted food, fences, and animals replacing what the bull destroyed, much to the delight of everyone. Our second book, Granny the Champion Knitter. The ship The Rena grounded off Tauranga and Granny organized knitting vests for the penguins. We had so much fun retelling these two stories as the tamariki had taken in all the knowledge. They felt empowered to share their favorite bits of the stories. "Boat crashed, oil came out, penguins got jerseys. Funny knitted food and animals got saved.
I had a special surprise for them as I returned to Skeinz wool shop in Napier I knew they had a large penguin with a jersey on and yes they let me borrow it for a week. Hidden in a bag for mat time the curiosity was immense as to what was in the bag. The smiles were well worth the effort seeing the shared joy on the faces looking at me. The penguin was named Choppy and returned to his home with a little sign on with his name and a thank you from the tamariki from Beststart Greenmeadows. We have continued on to read penguin stories which all relate back to our Choppy.
