This month at BestStart Motutaiko we participated in a local event Greening Taupo where we were to ‘Paint the town green’ for the day. This included a community Arbor day planting event where over 4000 trees were planted. Our contribution was having a fundraising day where we dressed in Green and collected gold coin donations to go towards planting more trees. Within the centre the children helped us to clean up our leaves and reuse these to create masterpieces such as leaf rubbings and crowns. We had the trough filled with leaves for the children to explore and use their imaginations. We cleaned up the outdoor environment and talked about the importance of looking after our environment. We discussed recycling, how and why we do it and had the children share with us what recycling they do at home. This is a great community event that was very special to our centre, whanau and children. Next year we hope to be able to be a part of planting some trees. Having special events such as these provides extra opportunities to share with tamariki the importance of looking after papatūānuku, our world, environment, and talk about whakapapa.
