Growing Frogs
The children in Kowhai have been discovering metamorphosis. We have a family of tadpoles at the centre which the children are observing and learning about how to care for them. Every day we prepare baby lettuce by cooking it and children delight in feeding this to the tadpoles and watching them eat. Each day the children are discovering the changes which occur, front legs, back legs and then the development of the froglet. The children understand that when they change into frogs they will be released back to the environment where they came from. These real life experiences help children to understand biological concepts and an awareness of the beauty of nature.
