At Beststart East Tamaki our Be-School ready program aims at developing children’s literacy awareness and knowledge through varied hands-on activities. We strongly believe that children learn best when they have appropriate environment where they can flourish by learning through play. Teachers are intentional in setting up the environment to get positive literacy outcomes for our tamariki (children) which also is an important part of our centre philosophy.

Children’s self-identity starts with knowing their name and this is the first thing that we focus on at BestStart East Tamaki. What better way to learn about letters than knowing the letters of own name!

Each room has a wall where children are encouraged to pick up their name from one wall and put it on the other side. Our whanau are important part of this aspect of learning in the morning.

Children are provided multi-model literacy tools and materials to practice their mark-making as well as their fine motor skills; be it white board with markers; paper, pens, crayons, pencils; brush with water; paints and so on. All the lines, squiggles, patterns and shapes that children create are termed as MARK MAKING which is fundamentally the basis of developing the writing skill.

We are very proud to present some our children’s work in the above photos.
