Recently we celebrated the Maori New year - Matariki. This is an annual event here at BestStart cashmere. We prepare soup and bread with the children in the lead up and on the night the children preform and then we all enjoy the kai with our families. It's a wonderful evening that is enjoyed by many and looked forward to every year.

This year we had a little twist. When we were preparing the food with the children we were cutting some pumpkin. We decided to keep some seeds so that we could plant them this spring. So we learnt how we were to prepare and dry the seeds. Now that spring is upon us we've decided to plant the seeds. We gathered some soil from our secret garden and then we put the seeds into little pots. We added banana water. This was a jug of water with banana skins in that had been left for a couple of days. The potassium from the skins is very good for helping plants grow. Then we added some water. The children will now help the teachers to tend to these little seeds in the hopes that we can grow our very own pumpkins that we can use in next years Matariki celebrations.
