In the Kowhai Room, we value authentic learning experiences with our tamariki, opportunities for tamariki to be immersed in real life, hands on play.  Children regularly have opportunities to get involved with gardening, caring for pets and animals, cooking and taking care of each other.  Kaiako see tamariki as more than capable, and intentionally providing rich, open experiences for children to try things out, learning as they go!

Our new goldfish have been a huge hit!  Tamariki regularly help to feed the fish in the mornings, keenly observe them throughout the day, and one of our Mum’s even offered to help out with cleaning and refilling the tank.

Tamariki recently helped to plant out our garden with edible herbs, vegetables, and flowers.  Children helped to harvest these and incorporate them throughout their daily play.

Hands on baking and meal preparation are another rich learning experience.  Tamariki recently had a go making their own pizzas.  They created their own pizza bases from scratch, following the process through to mix their dough and let it rise, before moulding it into pizza bases, on which their chose and helped to add their own toppings.
