Happy Diwali from BestStart Buchanans Road
This year BestStart Buchanans Road joined with our Hindu families in celebrating Diwali, Festival of Lights.
Leading up to the special days we learned about Diwali which is an annual festival which celebrates the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil and the importance of knowledge over ignorance in October and November, in accordance with the lunar calendar. We retold the story of Lord Rama triumphing over King Ravana using board stories in the Preschool Room Soon, the children were helping to retell the story and loved joining in with the story.
We celebrated the bright and colourful festival with a range of Diwali traditions such as creating colourful rangoli designs on the ground with chalk as well as on paper with coloured sand. One of our lovely parents came in to do henna designs on the hands of our tamariki and our toddler children decorated beautiful henna hands with collage. Another of our parents brought in some special Indian sweet treats, known as mithai, for our tamariki to take home to celebrate. Our whole centre came together to sing songs about Diwali that we had been practicing and we shared videos of these with our whānau.
We are looking forward to making Diwali part of our annual celebrations!
