Happy Holi at BestStart Flat Bush
At BestStart Flat Bush, we respect, value, embrace, and celebrate diverse culture. On the 10th of March we celebrated Holi festival at the centre. Holi is a festival of colours - This ancient tradition marks the end of winter and honors the triumph of good over evil. Celebrants light bonfires, throw colorful powder called gulal, eat sweets, and dance to traditional folk music. Today our tamariki and kaiako dressed up in colourful outfits and we all enjoyed dancing to traditional Indian music. Moreover, kaiako has also prepared delicious traditional donuts, called gulagula, for the children. Gulagulas are like lightly sweetened mini donuts made of flour, sugar, water, butter and vegetable oil. The children enjoyed having gulagula for morning and afternoon tea and we all had fun dancing to Indian beats, it was a fun-filled day!
It is also lovely to see other children from other cultural backgrounds joining the celebration by wearing their traditional costumes and dancing around. It is lovely to share laughter with each other. Through learning experiences such as these, it promotes diverse identities, cultures and languages, which supports children in building a strong sense of belonging and identity while taking pride in who they are and where they are from.
