Xīn Nián Kuài Lè. Happy Lunar new year. We absolutely love celebrating cultural events.

The tamariki (children) and kaiako (teachers) love to learn about the different cultures we have present in the centre. We always get involved and try and find new fun ways to celebrate. One of the best ways to learn and celebrate culture is through food, so we made sure to have some yummy jiǎozi (dumplings) and chǎofàn (fried rice).

The tamariki (children) loved exploring the new textures and the taste of these meals. We spent the month doing lots with red, collage on duraseal and creating different patterns on the windows. We also did lots of art, one of our masterpieces involved a rabbit as that is the Chinese animal for the year 2023.

We also got told the story of the lunar new year by one of our beautiful teachers, Silky. Silky also explained to us some of the traditions she experienced growing up as a Chinese Indonesian, how they would say "gōng xǐ fā cái" and get given their red envelope filled with money! The tamariki (children) loved hearing these stories from Silky's upbringing.

We love being able to celebrate our diversity and all the different cultures we have within our centre whānau (family). We truly believe "the beauty of this place lies in the cultures of our people."
