We have listened to the voice of our busy 15-month to 2 1/2-year-olds and have created an amazing learning environment just for them. This has been put into action after we observed our youngest toddlers wanting more room to move, challenge themselves, and have the opportunity to explore new and exciting things which can be tricky when you share the environment with the youngest members of our Riccarton whanau. We have now created the room next to the nursery to support our busier Toddlers.

As you can see from the photos the children are loving this new environment! They take part both independently and alongside their peers. The inside and outside are set up to offer lots of fun experiences where the toddlers can challenge their fine and gross motor skills. We have even combined the inside and outside so our busy toddlers can challenge their gross motor skills in an environment they like (as we all know how much Toddlers love to climb).

The experiences are based on the children’s interests and although children may not always be able to communicate these interests to us, their Kaiako / teachers observe their play and talk with their whanau/families to see what their interests are at home. We then weave this into what we have observed and create a fun learning environment that will support their current interests as well as build upon any aspirations and goals their whanau wish for them.
