Over the past few months at BestStart Raureka, Nga Puawai group focus has been around our Maara Kai and growing organic produce to share with our whanau and community. Our tamariki have loved planting, caring for and harvesting the produce they have grown and sharing it out with our whanau. This has been in both our editable garden and around the centre, teaching our tamariki to be kaitiaki of our environment.

We noticed our tomatoes were growing out of control and we had a lot of ripe fruit ready to harvest. Two eager tamariki were willing to lend a hand and start picking our tomatoes. In just 20 mins of harvesting we managed to gather at least 6kgs of ripe tomatoes ready to share with our whanau. With such a large quantity of tomatoes we decided to make tomato relish. Our tamariki helped clean and prepare the tomatoes, while our cook made the relish.
