Healthy Lunchbox Workshop

On Monday, March 13, BestStart Waitangirua had a whānau hui with a guest speaker from the Heart Foundation. The topic for the night was providing insight on healthy and unhealthy foods, as well as how to prepare healthy meals and lunchboxes for the tamariki.

Tino Atonio-Johnston from the Heart Foundation, discussed the amount of sugar in different drinks and explained the different food groups, how important they are for the tamariki's growth and development, and how much the tamariki need from each food group and what benefits they will get from them. Tino also explained the amount of fat present in common takeaway food like fish and chips, burgers, etc. and what we can substitute for them to make them healthier. She also showed some examples of different ways to prepare healthy lunchboxes that are easy to make and budget-friendly.

There was a huge turnout from our whānau who appreciated the workshop as it gave them healthy lunchbox ideas that they can prepare for their children. Afterwards, everyone sampled some healthy food options prepared by some kaiako. Pamphlets and recipes were also shared with all whānau to try at home.
