Helping others with BestStart Papakura

August has been a busy and fun-filled month at the centre as we welcomed a few new children and Whanau in all the rooms, along with our children transitioning through rooms and reaching their milestones. We love to celebrate their success and these milestones with them at the centre to keep that sense of belongingness.

Fundraising events are also a big part of BestStart Papakura, and this month we celebrated Daffodils Day on the 26th of August to support and fundraise for the cancer society. Daffodil’s day symbolises hope for all New Zealanders impacted by cancer.

We all got to dress up in our yellow outfits making sure to dress to impress for best dressed which went to Mabel in the preschool room.
There have been lots of fun activities, including painting and sensory activities. We got creative and made daffodils using egg cartoons which we painted yellow. We coloured in daffodils. We got our faces painted with daffodils on our cheeks and lastly made daffodils with yellow paper.
We made some yellow play dough and had yellow pipe cleaners set up. Tamariki and Kaiako tried to make some flowers from the play dough. We also had a yellow cupcake bake sale for gold coin donations. These activities give children an understanding of Daffodils Day, along with teaching them to work together and developing an understanding of how we can contribute to the people around the community.

This celebration provided our children with experiences to instil values and positive feelings towards helping others. The children have learnt that the raised money will go towards helping sick people, and it is an opportunity for us to assist our community. It was a great way to support children learn empathy and Aroha for others.
