This morning at BestStart Willowpark we had a wee visitor to the Kiwi room playground.

Hodgey the hedgehog decided to explore our playground last night, so today we had to help him get back to the safety of nature.

We set him up a little house to keep him safe whilst we decided how we were going to get him home. The tamariki enjoyed watching the hedgehog from a safe distance as not to scare him.

We did some great drawing of the hedgehog and created some hedgehogs made of matchsticks to represent his prickly spines.

We decided that we needed to learn more about the hedgehog so watch some Youtube videos to help us.

At 9am we headed across the road to the park to find somewhere safe for Hodgey to call home. We walked around the park looking for the perfect spot for him, soon we discovered a nice hole in a big old oak tree that we thought would be perfect.

We gently tipped the hedgehog out of the box and sat very quietly as he gathered his courage to explore his new home and get in a safe spot to sleep the day away.

Many of the tamariki at Willowpark had never seen a hedgehog before so this provided a great chance for some real learning to occur. The children are currently exploring nature and sustainability so being able to help our wildlife provided an opportunity for some great discussions and learning.

We hope that our new friend Hodgey the Hedgehog enjoys his new home at the park.
