At BestStart Welcome Bay, we pride ourselves in celebrating the diversity of the cultures that our tamariki bring to our centre. Recently we celebrated Holi, which is also called the "festival of colours". It is a vibrant and joyful Hindu celebration, which in India marks spring’s arrival, the triumph of good over evil, and celebrates the legendary love between Radha and Lord Krishna.

Here at Beststart Welcome Bay, the tamariki and kaiako celebrated this festival by throwing powdered colours on themselves and their friends. It was incredible watching tamariki having limitless fun and strengthening relationships among themselves and with kaiako.

At that moment, nobody was untouched by the colours and love that was spreading in the air. It was a great opportunity to reinforce the trust and confidence that our tamariki have in their teachers and to embrace the beauty of different cultures that our tamariki bring here to our centre.

This is a big part of our vision of "cherishing our connections" and how we can see it, feel it and live it every day at Beststart Welcome Bay. It is also linked to Te Whāriki, under the Mana Whenua (Belonging) Strand which recognises diversity and places importance in ensuring that every child's culture and background is valued. We value the connections we have with each child and family that make up our learning community.
