We’ve had another fun start to the month with our Tiriti o Waitangi Day celebrations. Once again our tamariki were in charge of creating some beautiful mahi toi/artwork and decorations to make our ruma/room look beautiful. Our tamariki looked at weaving with paper and then got hands on observing ferns and koru to do their own observational drawings of these beautiful plants. We’ve also being creating our own whare with lolly sticks and drawing tiki on them.

This year we looked at the history of Waitangi Day at wā whāriki and then decided to look at creating our own Tiriti. We had a korero about how we can be good friends in our centre to one another and looked how we can keep one another safe. One of our Kaiako taught us a new poi dance which was super fun! We also had a beautiful Te Tiriti o Waitangi song pukapuka/book by Sharon Holt to finish off a very thought provoking mat time!

Our Reggio inspired project work is underway looking into role play and how tamariki are making sense of their worlds through this expression. We’ve noticed pepe/babies are a hot topic of play and korero with tamariki using balls and dolls to put inside their T Shirts to pretend they are having their own pepe. So cute! Some of our whanau are expecting new pepe in their whanau very soon so we have been looking at helping our pepe dolls get dressed, have baths and change kope/nappies in preparation for being helpful brothers and sisters. Next month we will be looking at photos of ourselves when we were pepe and try and see if we can recognise our ngā hoa/friends and creating our own whānau tree. Exciting times ahead!
