Our Infants and Toddlers in our Huia Iti room are curious and courageous learners.  They enjoy everything hands-on and sensory play is one of their favorite areas to explore.  Our Kaiako enjoy setting up new and exciting experiences for our tamariki where they can become fully immersed in play, experimenting safely with their bodies and engaging all of their senses.

Developing our senses throughout our learning environment supports our tamariki’s cognitive development and learning. Sensory play builds nerve connections in the brain’s pathways, which supports complex learning skills.  This is an aspect of play very important to our curriculum here at BestStart Wolverton Street and especially for our young infants. We value learning through active exploration, developing working theories, and making sense of the natural, social, physical, and material worlds. You will notice your child’s senses develop through active exploration, where they make sense of how things taste, feel, smell, and sound.  These opportunities allow them to make connections with their wider world, drawing on experiences from their home life and experimenting with these ideas through play.

Our Infants have had a great morning exploring and experimenting with their own thoughts and ideas.  They have made new discoveries, mastered skills, and for some, taking the first step to enjoy getting messy!  Messy and sensory play is often a very sociable experience as tamariki and Kaiako will interact through language and gestures, share in amusement, laughter, and celebrations, and practice skills like turn-taking and working with and alongside our peers.
