The children in our nursery here at BestStart Parkside love any kind of messy play learning experiences and love feeling various textures around the room and through learning experiences we provide. We have recognised the children loving any type of waterplay and the animal resources we have so we decided to freeze some trays and ice block moulds with water, glitter, sea animals and seaweed. This was a great sensory experience for the children as well as supporting their interests of exploration and water play. Throughout this learning experience, kaiako talked to the children about the temperature of the ice and how it felt, the colour of the glitter, and what animals were frozen. The ice would slip out of the children’s hands so we would then talk about the texture of it. Through discovering these various features of the ice is a step in classification, or sorting.
