Imaginary/Creative Play
Over the past few months our children have been interested in imaginary/creative play and we have seen this happening both inside and outside. We have seen lots of different play from family play, camping and building camp fires, to shops and emergency services play such as police, fire engines and ambulances.
Imaginary/creative play is vital for children’s cognitive, social and emotional development it allows the child the opportunities to express their emotions and feelings in a fun and safe way. Children are able to expand their vocabulary and literacy skills through their play while working with and alongside their peers.
Imaginary/creative play promotes children’s socialization and communication skills and allows them to substitute objects for real life objects such as using a block for a phone or a chair for a car and leaves and sticks for food.
Theorists believe that children need free play to develop their mind, bodies and spirits.
