"In our backyard" is the theme of our new group planning in the Kiwi room. Through this planning we will be offering all sorts of opportunities and activities for children's learning. Today we had a good old kiwi BBQ.

We lit a fire in the sand pit, and waited patiently as Sheryl cooked our sausages. Everyone kept themselves safe by sitting well back from the fire on the sandpit deck. As the sausages cooked we shared stories of BBQs held in our own backyards as well as had a singalong. (10 fat sausages sizzling in the pan, one went pop and the other went bang!).

We enjoyed our sausages on bread with tomato sauce, Yum!

After our sausages we popped corn. It took ages and the end result was a little disappointing, smoky and burnt. Brenda, kindly made us some more popcorn in the kitchen. Reka, delicious!

While a great fun activity there was also lots of learning happening today.

Children learned about keeping themselves and others safe from harm, especially around the fire. They made connections between people, places and things in their world as they recalled and shared stories about their own BBQ experiences. They used mathematical concepts with enjoyment, meaning and purpose as we sang the sausages song.
