At BestStart Motutaiko one of our passionate teachers who has a love of art history has been introducing our tamariki to famous artists and their artwork by creating experiences inspired by these artists.

She started with Michelangelo and showcased his work in the Sistine Chapel. She printed out examples of his art to show and inspire the children.  While each child painted she told them basic information about the artist.  For a long time it was believed that he lay on his back on scaffolding when he painted the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. Now people believe he just stood on the platform. She thought it would be fun to have the children lay on their back and paint an angel picture. They had fun painting from a different position, and their paintings were indeed masterpieces!

Next she did Piet Mondrian and Edvard Munch and recreated the famous artwork 'The Scream'.

We then made flower crowns to represent and learn about Frida Kahlo and her work. She was a Mexican painter known for her many portraits, self-portraits, and works inspired by the nature and artifacts of Mexico.

We have continued to explore more artists and will have a book that displays each child’s art work masterpiece and the history behind it. The children have loved being immersed in the artworld and have been inspired in their own creations.
