Intergenerational Play in the City

1

As we leap into term three, our intergenerational play group starts up again. Ever fortnight on a Thursday morning we wander on down to the local community Centre to read, draw, talk, play and sing waiata with the elderly. This is our primary excursion that allows our younger tamariki to get out into the community, as each fortnight we take a different group of tamariki ranging between 10 months and 5 years old.

This excursion encourages positive interactions between our tamariki and elderly which can be a truly enriching experience with numerous benefits. These intergenerational connections create a unique bond that fosters empathy, understanding, and respect across age groups. Through these interactions, tamariki gain valuable life lessons, while the elderly experience a sense of purpose and renewed vitality.

It also supports tamariki with developing enhanced social skills, compassion, and patience, while also learning from the wisdom and life experiences of their older counterparts. These interactions promote mental stimulation, cognitive development, and emotional well-being for both tamariki and the elderly, fostering a stronger and more compassionate society.

Excursions play a pivotal role within our curriculum at Leeds Street. These excursions provide hands-on learning experiences outside the confines of the classroom, stimulating their curiosity and enhancing their understanding of the world. We pride ourselves on being able to provide so many rich excursions that promote tamariki connections to the community.
