It's a Wet, Wild, Wonderful Winter
Like the old saying goes "There is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing." Here at BestStart Mt Eden the weather has not hindered the exploration of our outdoor environment, or the elements!
Because of the water shortage we are thinking of ways to be resourceful with water, collecting it with pots, cups, containers and other things we have discovered along the way that had collected the rain overnight. The tamariki are inquisitive about where they can find water and how they can make the most of it, because when it is gone - it's gone!
One thing even the teachers learnt about was our swan plant - do you know what we found? A butterfly exercising it's wings after emerging from the chrysalis... as well as two other monarch caterpillars - right in the middle of winter!
Rain also provides perfect conditions for our mud pit and what once was as hard as concrete is now as soft as a sofa so the tamariki can churn their own mud - more water makes the mud more runny, less water makes it thicker - what a great way to learn about science!
So next time you look out the window and think it's too wet to go outside, do what we do - dress warmly, put on your wet weather gear and your kamuputu (gumboots) and head out and discover what wonders winter had to offer.
