We enrolled our daughter Alexa at BestStart Howick originally as a stop gap arrangement. Her previous daycare had closed and we

had to find a replacement in a rush. At the time, we chose BestStart Howick mainly because it was right across the road and was

open from 7am-6pm. However, the place has grown on us. We are constantly surprised at how much Alexa is learning!

We drop Alexa early at 7.15 just after the centre opens. Previously, breakfast was such a struggle! However, children at BestStart Howick are served breakfast which means she can eat at her own pace, and I don’t get late for work.

In the evenings, the fastest we can reach home is 5.30. I thought that Alexa would be upset. However, very soon, Alexa told us that she likes to be picked up only after 5.45. “I’ve got to eat my crackers before I go”, she said. When I questioned why, she told me it’sbecause the crackers were round. And, because it’s time she cherishes with friends like her who get picked up later.

It’s great to see the sense of belonging Alexa has with BestStart Howick. It’s where she spends most of her day. We love listening to
her stories whether they are about the amazing tree she climbs or the delicious food she gets to eat. Alexa loves the place so much,

she recently invited me to spend the day there with her.

The rules were simple:

  • Don’t step on anyone’s toes
  • No beanie, no playing outside
  • Always be kind

I made sure to follow them, so I don’t get sent to the Centre Manager Phil’s room
