Our visit to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds offered a rich, meaningful experience grounded in Māori culture. Through the pōwhiri, tamariki were welcomed into a space where tikanga, waiata, kapa haka and mau rākau came to life before them.

As they watched and listened, a sense of whanaungatanga began to emerge. Many children made connections to their own experiences, joining in songs, mirroring actions and proudly sharing, “I know this song.” These moments reflected their growing confidence, identity and sense of belonging, as they contributed what they knew and invited others into their world.

The experience also opened space for rich kōrero, as tamariki named what they recognised and remembered. Learning became more than observation; it was participation, connection and shared understanding.

Later, we gathered under the sun to fly kites together, strengthening bonds through simple joy and collaboration. This visit highlighted the power of learning through place and community. At Waitangi, tamariki were not just learning about culture, they were engaging with it, seeing themselves reflected and deepening their sense of identity and connection.

Special thanks to our whānau for their help. We could not do these awesome trips without your awhi. How lucky are we to have this gem a 30-minute drive away?
