Here at BestStart Mahora we have been learning how to look after our bodies and our gardens. We have also been learning te reo in our daily programme. Today we learnt about kaitiakitanga.

Kaitiakitanga is a Maori word and it means guardian. In Te Ao Māori, Kaitiakitanga means guardianship and protection. It is a way of managing the environment. A kaitiaki is a guardian. This can be a person or group that cares for an area such as a lake or forest. They are given that role by the local iwi! And what beautiful Kaitiaki you all were today! We are looking forward to taking care of these wonderful vegetables and eventually harvesting these special treats for you all!
