Welcome to winter here at BestStart Mahora!

As the cooler months arrive, our learning continues to thrive, guided by our centre values and priorities.

One of the values we hold close to our hearts is sustainability—caring for Papatūānuku and ensuring we make choices that protect and nurture our natural world.

This week our tamariki enjoyed some hands-on learning through baking. But the learning didn’t stop once the baking was finished—our egg shells were saved for a very special reason! The children discovered that egg shells can be reused in our garden as a natural way to protect the vegetables we have just planted for our centre guinea pigs.

By sprinkling the shells around the plants, we are creating a barrier to keep slugs and snails away, ensuring the vegetables grow strong and healthy. This simple yet meaningful activity has opened up conversations about how we can reuse and recycle in our daily lives, turning what might otherwise be waste into something valuable.

Tamariki also explored the idea of growing kai to sustain both our bodies and the animals we care for. This connects to our Healthy Heart learning, where we think about how fresh vegetables and fruit help us to stay strong and energised.

Through these experiences, our children are developing a sense of responsibility, problem-solving skills, and an understanding of how small actions contribute to a bigger picture of caring for the environment.

Most importantly, they are seeing that when we work together, we can make a real difference for our garden, our pets, and ourselves.
