Here at Coast Boulevard we have been working with whānau and tamariki, when it comes to building a bicultural curriculum.
We believe in creating safe spaces for all, as learners of Te Reo Māori, whether that be to try speaking new words , or showing that Te Reo Māori is supported and normalised in all of our environments.
At the moment in the Rata Room, the tamariki are learning a variety of Karakia in Māori for appropriate times throughout their day of learning.
As one of our contributions to our programme, we believe in growing our understanding in a natural way, having Karakia woven throughout our day. Through our daily Karakia, our tamariki, are embracing their becoming as active participants, partners and protectors, in honouring Te Tiriti o Waitāngi.
Here, in our space, Karakia is a way for us all, to ensure the revitalisation of Te Reo Māori. It is also a way to connect to every thing around us and the world we live in.
Mauri and Meditation is a vital part of our daily programme. We understand the changing landscape of whānau lives. With families working and tamariki being present everyday, we are learning how to care for ourselves from the inside out.
On top of providing delicious healthy Kai, we are creating and learning new ways to feed our bodies, minds and spirit with meditation, learning to breathe and yoga classes.
For us, our Mauri is central to our wellbeing and taking the time out to rest our body and mind for ten minutes is all it takes to nourish ourselves.
At 4 o’clock each day, the tamariki know, when the lights go out it’s time to rest and rejuvenate. To the waiata of Maisey Rika “Tangaroa”, the tamariki transcend from their busy day into a world that is calm, peaceful and tranquil.
Together in the world known as “moemoea” or place of dreams, tamariki are encouraged to take deep breaths and re centre themselves back to the state of mauri tau or peace. On the days we aren’t inside, we are outside connecting to Te Taiao our environment. We take in the clouds, the wind, the sun and even the sound of the rain when it is present.
We are dedicated to supporting our tamariki and whānau with everyday tools such as this to navigate the many different pathways in life we face.
