We were lucky enough to have some Kawakawa leaves brought in to learn about and understand the amazing healing properties that this taonga (gift) from Rongoā Māori has given to us. All the children worked together to prepare the harvest, to make balm.

Together we learnt that Kawakawa is one of the most important herbs in traditional herbal Māori medicine,

It is used to treat cuts, wounds, dry lips, various pains, and so much more.

The holes in the Kawakawa leaves are made by the Kawakawa looper moth only found in New Zealand! The moth eats the leaves that have the most healing properties and these are the best leaves to look for and use when making medicine with Kawakawa.

Thank you to the whanau that supported us on this learning journey and for bring in the Kawakawa leaves for us to create our Kawakawa balm.
