Keeping ourselves healthy
Our current programme planning at BestStart Motutaiko is around keeping ourselves healthy. The children had been showing an interest in building their physical development as well as an awareness of how to look after themselves. With the cooler months coming and many bugs appearing we thought it was also a great opportunity to build on our tamariki’s knowledge around how to look after themselves and keep themselves healthy.
We have been exploring and building our knowledge and understanding about our bodies and how they work. We have learnt about muscles, veins, bones, and organs. What these are and their purpose. This is also building our vocabulary. We have had great discussions around looking after our teeth, ensuring we are brushing them and providing our body with non-sugary treats. This has sparked a lot of conversations around going to the dentist and their personal experiences with this. Discussions around fruit and vegetables has been great and what they can provide our bodies with. Handwashing has also been interesting as we learn about the importance of washing our hands. We have had different experiments to show germs on our hands and how to wash them off with soap, including the BestStart hand washing song.
Outside we have changed around our playground to encourage our physical development to pose new challenges. We have exposed the children to numerous physical activity games such as ripper rugby, hopscotch, dancing, parachute games, yoga and climbing. These different experiences use different muscles and shows us that physical activity can be done in many different forms and can be fun and enjoyable.
As our planning continues the children’s understanding will continue to grow and we hope to get some experts into the centre. ;
