Kiwi Room is growing Mushrooms!

Who likes Mushrooms?

It was interesting to see which children in the Kiwi Room put their hand up to that question. We are lucky to have Jack's Dad, Ben, come in and talk to us about the Mushrooms that he grows and sells to local restaurants as well as Grow Your Own Mushroom Kits.

The mushrooms we are going to grow originate in Bethunes Gully and are Phoenix Oyster Mushrooms. Normally you will find mushrooms growing on the forest floor on logs etc, but this time you will find them in the Kiwi Room growing in our Resource Cupboard from a big plastic bag.

Take a look at the picture of the bag that has what looks like straw in it, now look at the white stuff. The white stuff is the Mycelium which is the fungi that grow our Mushrooms. We have to keep it in the dark for a couple of weeks and keep looking for wee nodules or the fruits of growth poking out the slits in the bag. Once we see those, we cover them with cloth and spray that with water twice a day to keep conditions humid.

Hopefully, within another couple of weeks, we will have some beautiful mushrooms like in the pictures of the white bucket.

We are looking forward to seeing these grow and be able to harvest them to then eat!

If you want to buy a Mushroom Kit, head to the Farmers Market and see Ben!
